As You Make Your Bed…

Welcome to the 124th edition of “In Touch”. As always, I would love to continue the conversation so please hit reply and let me know what you think.

Story of the Week: “As You Make Your Bed...”

Last Saturday, I was sitting by the sea with my three kids when my son Rolando’s coach texted me: “Where was Rolando today? He missed training.”

I didn’t know that there had been a Saturday session. The information about it was shared on Viber and I didn’t have the app (now I do!). I then discovered that this was his second missed practice. His coach, Minos, was calm but firm: “Players are chosen on merit. Missing training has consequences.”

A few minutes later, Rolando listened in disbelief as I told him that his name was not on the team sheet. I reminded him of the old proverb “As you make your bed, so must you lie on it” and explained that it refers to how we all have to accept the consequences of our actions.

In that moment, his coach taught him lessons that go far beyond football – that commitments must be honoured, promises kept, and that showing up and working hard always matter.

I wanted to see him play on Sunday. He had trained all summer long but, in the end, he missed the game. Hopefully, he will have learned these valuable lessons and will soon be playing as well as his coach and I know he can.

That evening, as I watched him reflect in silence on what had happened, I realized something: in parenting, as in leadership, it’s hard to watch tough lessons unfold – but those are the moments that shape character.

Words of Wisdom

“Wisdom consists of the anticipation of consequences.” Norman Cousins

“Every choice comes with a consequence. Once you make a choice, you must accept responsibility. You cannot escape the consequences of your choices, whether you like them or not.” Roy T. Bennett

A Question to Ponder, dear friend.

Have you ever learned a valuable lesson as a consequence of some action or inaction?
