Story of the Week: “The Club Is Your Goal. The City Is Your Legacy.”
I never expected a football story to give me goosebumps but that’s what happened recently. It was 6:30am and I was on the highway heading to Larnaca Airport, listening to the latest episode of Steven Bartlett’s The Diary of a CEO with his guest Jürgen Klopp. Around the 44-minute mark, something remarkable happened.
Bartlett surprised Klopp with a recorded message from Christian Heidel — the man who gave him his first managerial opportunity at Mainz 05.
In his message, Heidel reminded Klopp how he had taken Mainz — the club he once played for — to the Bundesliga for the first time in its history.
“You changed the team. You changed the city.”
Then he said it again, about Borussia Dortmund — where Klopp lifted trophies and rebuilt belief.
“You changed Dortmund. You changed the city.”
And then, about Liverpool, where he revived a struggling giant:
“You changed Liverpool. You changed the team, and you changed the city.”
In that moment I realised something powerful: changing a team can be your goal… for the year, the next five years or even the decade. But changing a city… that’s your legacy. Legacy is about impact, not just achievement.
Leaders, whether in business, sport or life: the true mark of your success lies not in what you build but in what you leave behind. Because trophies fade. Culture doesn’t.

A Question to Ponder, dear friend.
What part of your leadership will outlast you?
