Story of the Week: “New Year, New Insights"

I have always believed that every event in which I am involved is a learning opportunity – for me as much as for my audience – and my recent keynote address at MetLife was no exception. A day spent with the company’s incredible team left me with many valuable insights that I’m excited to share with you. Here are three lessons that not only struck a chord with me but can serve as inspiration for us all.

Speaking about his team, General Manager Stratos Petrou said something simple yet profound: “I am very proud of you... but I have bigger dreams for us.” This captures the essence of great leadership. It’s about celebrating what’s been achieved while daring to imagine and pursue what’s next. Leaders like Stratos remind us to raise the bar, set ambitious goals and inspire others to grow alongside us.

Then there was Constantinos Mishiali, a member of the MetLife team, who offered a brilliant metaphor: “No single aircraft leaves Larnaca Airport without knowing exactly where it’s going, even on a test flight.” In business, this speaks directly to the need for clarity. Whether launching a product, leading a team or managing change, defining the destination is essential. Much like pilots, we need a clear plan, especially if we’re navigating uncharted skies.

Finally, seasoned professional Stavroula Avgousti shared a vital truth: “Before you learn how to sell, you need to know what it is that you’re selling.” Her deep understanding of not only MetLife’s products but also those of its competitors goes beyond technical details. It’s about knowing your craft, respecting your customers and delivering with integrity. Whether in sales or any other field, success begins with expertise and a commitment to excellence.

These three lessons – on leadership, clarity and expertise – shape our choices every day. Whether leading a team, setting a strategy or tackling your next big challenge, they can serve as your compass.

To Stratos, Constantinos, Stavroula and the entire MetLife team: Thank you for reminding me why I still love what I do. In your special ways, you have inspired me to dream bigger, plan and prepare better and continue on my course of lifelong learning.
